The Regional Sanitary Landfill is located at Mile 24 on the George Price Highway approximately 2 miles heading due North along a paved access road. This is the country’s only sanitary landfill. The entire parcel of land where the landfill facility is located is 370 acres including a 50 m buffer strip at the perimeter. This is the final disposal location for waste originating from municipalities in the Western Corridor (Belize City, San Ignacio/ Santa Elena – Benque Viejo, San Pedro Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker). The first Municipal Solid Waste cell (Phase I) occupies approximately 5 acres. The landfill is equipped with a composite bottom liner system. The purpose of the composite bottom liner is to keep all liquids within the landfill and prevent contamination of ground water. There is also a leachate collection system which is designed to prevent a build up of the liquid on the liner. A submersible pump automatically discharges this contaminated liquid to the first of a series of three treatment ponds lined with a 1.50 mm thick high density polyethylene geomembrane (1st anaerobic; 2nd facultative; 3rd maturation). Once treated, this liquid effluent is either re-circulated through the landfill cell waste mass or discharged offsite if it meets the effluent standards established by the Department of the Environment.
This engineered Sanitary Landfill facility Includes:
- siting, design, and operational methods to ensure the protection of human health and the environment;
- monitoring of surface waters, groundwater, leachate (contaminated water) and landfill gas during the time the facility is open and operational;
- waste screening to prevent the receipt and disposal of unacceptable and/or hazardous solid and liquid wastes;
The landfill facility is equipped with an administrative building, scale house, weighbridge, wheel wash, materials storage areas and maintenance building. It also encompasses a hazardous waste cell which is to be used for the disposal/storage of pre – treated and containerized hazardous waste.
